How to Change to the New KZN “ZN” Number Plates – Step-by-Step Guide (2024-2025)

If you’re a vehicle owner in KwaZulu‑Natal (KZN), you’ve probably heard about the shift to the new “ZN” number plate format. This change affects how your car is registered, what your licence plates look like, and when you need to act. At Peers Auto Spares, we’re here to help you understand exactly what to do — and how our services make it easy.

✅ Why the Change to “ZN” Plates?

As of 1 December 2023 (and with full rollout by the end of 2025), KZN moved away from town-based plate prefixes like “ND” (Durban) or “NP” (Pietermaritzburg) to a province-wide continuous numbering system ending in “ZN”. SAnews+1

📝 Step-by-Step: How to Change to the New ZN Plates

Here’s a step-by-step process to help you navigate the plate change:

  1. Check your renewal date. When your vehicle licence disc is about to expire, request the new plate format during renewal.
  2. Complete your renewal through the licensing authority or online (via eNATIS or your bank). Your vehicle registration details will be updated to include the “ZN” suffix. Post Office+1
  3. Order your physical “ZN” number plates. Choose an embosser or plate provider – we at Peers Auto Spares can supply high-quality stamped metal plates.
  4. Fit your new plates: Remove the old plates, affix the new front and rear plates securely, ensuring the format complies with standards.
  5. Update your logbook & insurer: A new plate format often means your logbook must be updated. Inform your insurance company about the change.
  6. Keep your renewed licence disc in the vehicle – it should reflect the new registration number.
  7. Dispose of your old plates safely (or keep them if you’d like as a memento!).

💰 How Much Does It Cost?

  • The set of new KZN “ZN” plates (metal/acrylic) typically costs around R350-R450. KZN Number Plates
  • You’ll also cover the renewal fee for your licence disc, which varies by vehicle weight and type.
  • Optional service-provider fees (embossing, fit-ment) may apply.

🔍 What to Consider (Avoid These Mistakes)

  • Make sure the font, size, and layout comply with legal specs (metal plate, correct spacing, “ZN” suffix).
  • Avoid overpaying for unnecessary extras.
  • Don’t delay: once you hit the 2025 deadline, enforcement will increase.
  • Ensure the provider offers lawful plates (the correct stamp, province mark, etc.).
